Is MARQ a no kill shelter?
"No Kill" is a term coined by the animal welfare industry in the 90's, and while the movement itself has had many positive impacts on animal welfare, the term itself has become very polarizing and misleading. Most people believe if a shelter or rescue is "no kill" it never euthanizes animals, and that isn't the truth. To be considered "no kill" an organization has to have at least a 90% placement rate for all its animals. So by this definition, Midwest Animal ResQ has exceded this standard since 2009, meaning we have met the qualifications to be defined as a "no kill" organization since we opened. However we've made the deliberate decision to NOT call ourselves a no kill shelter. It's language we feel is decisive and misleading.
We believe that transparency is paramount when running an animal welfare organization. Our supporters deserve to know the details of where our animals come from, and where they end up. While our statistics show we are indeed a "no kill shelter" by definition. With all the confusion surrounding this term, we chose to show our statistics in a simple and clear way that doesn't lend itself to interpretation. At Midwest Animal ResQ we do, at times, euthanize animals. This is always a heart wrenching decision for our staff and volunteers, and never taken lightly. While this choice is always extremely difficult, we never want our judgement to be clouded by statistics, instead we want to make a decision based only on what is best for each individual animal. We do not manage to a spreadsheet, but rather to the greater good of the animals in our care, and those that will need us in the future.
MARQ may euthanize for the following reasons:

MARQ may euthanize for the following reasons:
- Serious bite history
- Does not display typical warning behaviors prior to biting
- Cannot be safely handled by staff
- Severe aggression towards other animals and/or history of severely or mortally injuring other animals
- Offensive aggression or predatory behavior towards children
- Medical conditions that severely effect quality of life for the animal
- Above and beyond all else we are weighing the quality of life for that particular individual animal at all times, sometimes humane euthanasia is the most compassionate outcome.
